Jazz is known for its improvisational nature and unpredictability. Similar to the unscripted nature of jazz, life embodies this essence. In Disney’s newest Pixar Animation film, “Soul,” musician Joe Gardner finds himself on a quest to find his true purpose in life.

Once an aspiring jazz performer, Gardner finds himself working as a middle school music teacher. After his idol offers him the opportunity to pursue a jazz career, Gardner suffers a near death experience. Stuck in a purgatory state, Gardner finds himself a companion, soul number 22, who helps him return his soul back to his body.

22 and Gardner help each other overcome their problems and realize that happiness is not limited to a single purpose. After achieving his life goal of performing with a renowned jazz musician, he realizes that it didn’t fulfill him in the way he expected it to. Gardner discovers his happiness is not tied to a single purpose or passion; it can extend into various parts of life. 22 also finds solace in this concept, finally deciding that the one thing that fulfills her most is simply living.

The journey helps Gardner re-establish his purpose. He realizes he failed to notice the simple things. Although his life revolved around a dream of being a professional jazz player, he discovers more joy in mentoring young musicians. With the help of 22, he comes to the conclusion that it’s acceptable for plans to go out the window.

High school students can relate to Gardner’s situation in relation to the pressure of choosing the right career path. Both characters represent real life struggles of finding a purpose and deciding whether or not to pursue a passion. “Soul” assures that it’s completely acceptable to not have everything planned out when considering one’s future. Even for those who do have a blueprint, it’s okay for them to change and grow as time goes on. In particular, countless students end up changing their major once they get to college.
