The School Board finalized decisions on new administration staff, teachers and positions for several teachers as other faculty left.
Lohman named principal
For the past four years, Richard Lohman was an assistant principal, but after an extensive selection process, the School Board appointed him as the new principal on July 1.
“A long term goal would be opening up access for all of our students to the classes they need to be successful in their future goals,” Lohman said. “We also plan to empower historically disadvantaged student populations by providing the support necessary to enable them to perform as successfully as their peers.”
Annie Hernandez became an assistant principal following Lohman’s promotion. Her previous experiences as an educator include ASB Coordinator, English Language Coordinator, Language Arts teacher, journalism teacher and Curriculum Implementation support.
Staff departures
After former Calculus teacher and math department chairperson Nancy Bulgin retired, Brenda Pan and Nate Slaymaker took over AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC, respectively.
“I am excited about this new opportunity and the variety of classes, and students that I will get to teach,” Slaymaker said. “It is a challenge to teach an AP course, but I believe that both I and the students are ready to meet that challenge.”
Former French teacher Marie-Françoise Dao HoDang also announced her retirement. In addition to Spanish 2, Kristy Kenderes teaches all French classes. The foreign language department will begin interviews for a new Spanish teacher soon.
Science teacher Evan Dagger left temporarily due to ongoing medical issues in his family. James Haschke teaches in his place.
Assessment and Individualized Instructor Judith Forbes is also on a leave of absence. Dave Czolba will be her substitute until Forbes returns.
Hadikusumah returns
After volunteering at Union Station Homeless Services in the career development sector for the 2018-2019 school year, English teacher Vanessa Hadikusumah returned to the district.
Hadikusumah’s new lineup of classes include English 1 Sheltered, Advanced Literacy, College & Career Seminar and AP Literature and Composition.
Counseling department changes
Jose Marquez departed from the counseling department to work at Rancho Cucamonga High School.
“I loved being a counselor at TC,” Marquez said. “As a counselor, a place like Rancho Cucamonga and the experiences I would have will help me grow and be an even better counselor for students I work with.”
Monica Viss replaced Marquez after receiving her school counseling credential in May 2019 with a M.A. in Education.
Wang begins teaching career
Joanne Wang left her position as an Instructional Resource Specialist in the media center to teach chemistry at a charter school, starting this school year in August.
“TCHS will always be special to me,” Wang said. “I had the privilege to meet so many hard-working, talented, creative and sweet students and enjoyed collaborating with teachers on research projects.”
Jesse Navarro, a former TCHS registrar, will remain as a substitute for Wang until the hiring process is complete.
Taylor becomes Field Show Coordinator
Jack Taylor is the new marching instructor and Field Show Coordinator.
Taylor worked in the district for over 20 years as the band and orchestra instructor at Oak Avenue Intermediate School and the elementary schools.
