Football kicks off the season

Senior Alex Vera sped past the opposing defensive player during an away game on Aug. 30 against the Mark Keppel Aztecs. The boys varsity football team defeated the Aztecs in their first game of the season with a score of 38-14.

Varsity football began their season by securing a victory against the Mark Keppel Aztecs with a score of 38-14 on Aug. 29. They are working to follow this trend and continue to have a successful football season.
The team were defeated by the Alhambra Moors on Sept. 6 with a score of 41-0.
They continue to review and practice fundamentals such as catching and throwing with the help of their three new coaches: Nathan Slaymaker, Trey Campbell and Andrew Perez.
“We’re confident, so we just have to make sure we execute,” coach Riley Saxon said. “We know that we can block well, throw well and catch well, so we just have to remember to do that and if we do that we’ll be okay.”
The football team will face six other high schools, including Mountain View Vikings, the Fillmore Flashes and the Monrovia Wildcats.
These games will help measure the team’s preparation throughout the season as they head into league championships.
“I think that we just need to focus as a team and play hard,” junior Kevin Green said. “Alhambra beat us last year, so we have a desire to beat them this year. That desire to win will make us practice even better.”
The football team trained throughout the summer, from Monday to Wednesday during 3-5 p.m.
They’ve prepared for the upcoming season by utilizing the weight room on campus, and running through scenarios and plays for the game.
The team is also focusing on strengthening their offense, defense and special teams.
After their game against the Alhambra Moors, the team’s next football game will be an away game against the Mountain View Vikings at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13.
“This year we have really good leadership that is better than last year’s leadership,” Saxon said. “Even though we don’t have the same superstars that we had last year, we still have a lot of guys who are tough, love football and know how to play football.”
