The Temple City Vocal and Theater Arts Department organized tryouts for the TCHS March 2019 musical production of Mary Poppins from Nov. 5-7. A total of 186 students from Longden, Cloverly, Emperor, Oak Avenue Intermediate and TCHS tried out for the 16 major characters. Additional roles were added to ensure that each cast member has at least two scenes on stage to create a total of 36 character roles.
The performances in March represent the 400-500 hours students and directors spend rehearsing theatrical stunts, dance numbers and singing to put together the two-hour production. The live orchestra performs the original Broadway scores as well, bringing the audience an authentic theater experience.
“I hope that the students are able to have an experience that will make the audience feel great about coming to the theater,” Musical Coordinator Mr. Matt Byers said. “It gives a great experience to all family members because it’s a Disney production. We’re excited to present this to our community and area in general.”
The musical, as per tradition, will be at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse and musical dates are from March 15-17. Ticket sales start on Dec. 18 at the Christmas concert.
