The Girls Varsity Soccer team, currently in Division V of the Rio Hondo League, scored a victory of 6-0 at their first game against the Arroyo Knights on Nov. 27 with and overall record of 3-2.
After nine years of being in Temple City, Head Coach Joe Franco continues to guide the players in areas that need improvement and motivate the team to perform their best during games.
“I look forward to seeing if we can overcome obstacles and improve every day individually and as a team,” Coach Franco said. “The most rewarding part about coaching this group is seeing everyone come together for a common goal: to win league.”
Last year, Junior Devin Pitz played mostly as a defender. However, through long hours of practice, she is currently a striker, the position responsible for scoring goals and is nearest to the opponent’s goal.
“I’m excited to see how I can improve in that position,” Pitz said. “You only get four seasons through high school and they go by quick. I look forward to seeing how each player individually grows too.”
The week of the first match was game-heavy, which did not allow a lot of room for practice.
During practices, the team usually begin with a good warm-up.
Since it is the beginning of the season, they work on dribbling, shooting and passing.
In order to find which position is best for each player, depending on their skills in certain areas, the team practices playing against one another.
“The team is like another family I get to group up with after school,” Freshman Melissa Olivares said. “They cheer you on and support you. As long as the entire team works together and communicates, I think it’s possible to get through the season undefeated.
Over the years, a few players made it on the All-League first and second teams. Two years have passed since the varsity team made CIF.
The players are ready to show their opponents what they are capable of this season.
“If we don’t win league in the end, I hope they still had a memorable season that they can remember,” Coach Franco said. “This is a special group. I hope they realize how fun being on a Rams team can be.”
The Rams next home game will be on Dec. 13 against the Mark Keppel Aztecs.
