For the first time in TCHS sports history, there were enough golf players to divide the co-ed team into a boys team and girls team.
The girls team consists of nine students, ranging from freshmen to juniors, who are led by co-captains Junior Caitlin Chen and Sophomore Sidney Hsu. Their season consisted of 18 total matches, leading up to CIF on Oct. 29. The team obtained a total record of 15 wins to 3 losses.
“I think that the girls’ team was much more like a family,” Hsu said. “We supported and loved each other, and I felt like we were more competitive. The co-ed team was almost equally as fun, but it just didn’t feel as competitive.”
The girls’ opponents included the San Marino Titans, La Cañada Spartans, South Pasadena Tigers and Alhambra Moors.
In a six person match against the Titans with the largest score dropped, the team lost with a composite score of 203 points.
“We started off as a shaky, ragtag first year golf team. We were not expecting to win as much,” Chen said. “Then we started playing non-league matches and we started winning, and then league, where we became number one. Later on, we played our last league match against the Titans. We unfortunately lost, but as captain, I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.”
Most recently on Oct. 29, the girls competed in CIF at the Jurupa Hills Country Club in Riverside, which was the first preliminary round.
The team overall placed fourth with a composite score of 426, which disqualified them from the next round.
“It was really exciting and stressful. The fact that Temple City has never had a girls team really put a lot of pressure on us as a team and we were determined to do well,” Chen said. “It was a great experience to compete and play with other great teams. Because of this experience, I feel like we have grown as a team and we have motivation to do better next year.”
