Club Day
With 81 clubs represented at Club Day, students have a wide variety of groups to experience and join.
ASBL chartered fewer clubs this year, but there are 15 new clubs, such as the Ram Fam and Creators Connect.
Some clubs offer CSL hours to students who volunteer to help out in the community and other clubs allow students to learn various skills, like Computer Science Club.
“We want to give others opportunities to use the principles of computer science for personal instead of purely academic use,” Computer Science Club President Junior Derek Lee said. “We plan to do most activities online, such as Capture the Flag competitions and PicoCTF.”
Students have also formed new clubs to help people in need, such as Ray United FC.
Ray United FC works to connect kids from Uganda with people in this community with the common interest of soccer and education. In addition, they aim to raise resources to create more opportunities for those children.
Therapy dogs
After training for one year, Cabby and Lexi became certified therapy dogs in May of 2018.
As official therapy dogs, the two will continue to train with the ambassadors and offer a source of affection and comfort to students and staff in need.
Sophomores Clarissa Hong, Jasmine Chan, Phoebe Chan and David Sim, and Seniors Nancy Trinh, Megan Ho and Natalie Madrid are this year’s handlers.
“The dogs’ pilot trial has ended with their certification, but not much will change in terms of their role,” Sim said. “They will continue to help those in need and brightening the days of everyone they see.”
In addition, Juniors Samantha Chang and Phoebe Loh have become qualified therapy dog trainers who will help the new ambassadors with their job.
Last year’s rules about interacting with the dogs still apply: students should ignore them at all times, so that the dogs can do their job, unless the ambassadors allow the students to pet them after asking. It is also the students’ responsibility to tell the handler if the dog’s presence is causing any discomfort.
Due to allergies that some students and staff may have, Therapy Dog Program Coordinators Mr. Savay Lieu and Ms. Sue Hook will not be expanding the program with more therapy dogs.
