In honor of Stoneman Douglas High School, hundreds of students participated in the nationwide school walkout on Wednesday, March 14. Students left their classes at 10:00 am and gathered at the senior circle to express their opinions and give respect to the victims of the Florida shooting and other school shootings.
“Overall, I was very proud of my school for peacefully advocating for a cause a lot of people hold to heart,” Senior Phillip Mai said. “I was very glad to see the high school come together, and voice an opinion that will hopefully create a bigger, more positive impact for the future.”
Students over the age of 17 and a half were given the opportunity to pre-register for voting. Underclassmen could participate by signing a poster, emailing the district senator, or voicing their thoughts to the crowd.
Students like Sophomore Megan Ling took action by climbing onto the senior circle and letting their voices be heard. Ling shared details about an upcoming march in Los Angeles, as well as requested a moment of silence for the Parkland Florida victims.
“People need to realize that these are kids who are dying, kids who had a life ahead of them,” Ling said. “They’re a lot of things we could have done to help change the outcome of their lives and it’s just taking too long for a change to happen.”
