Current and incoming students filled the Gym, Senior Circle, 601, Media Center and the 100 and 200 quad at the second annual TCHS Showcase on Feb. 27 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Additionally, club members and other extracurriculars promoted their groups to the students in the club fair section.
Some extracurriculars and sports, such as football, decided to promote their groups by showcasing videos to represent their organizations in the Media Center.
Performing arts groups like Auxiliaries, Brighter Side Singers and Advanced Drama performed throughout the event in the Gym, Senior Circle and 601.
Although the primary function of the event was intended for middle school students to learn about the core and elective classes before choosing their schedule for the 2018-2019 school year, Assistant Principal Ms. Elena Li and the planning committee decided to include high school students as well. They wanted to give the current students a chance to showcase their work to the community.
“Out of all the schools in our district, we’re the only one that doesn’t have an open house,” Ms. Li said. “Although some might know a lot about our offerings, there are some that don’t and so the Showcase is a great way for them to learn.”
In order to include current students in the showcase, the school followed a modified assembly schedule. Zero period started at 7:26 a.m. and people went to their sixth period before lunch.
Following the lunch break, all students except for the Senior class attended the showcase. Instead, the Seniors had a lunch period that ended at 1:45 p.m. Students were released from their seventh period at 2:34 p.m.
“Through this event, I wanted students to see that sports medicine is not what they think it is,” sports medicine teacher Mr. Anthony Garcia said. “That it’s not just science and human anatomy and they actually have fun in this class.”
Link Leaders and Peer Listeners aided the middle school students from Oak Avenue Intermediate School to the high school and guided them through the campus.
Middle school students during their tour could scan a QR code for a scavenger hunt on Google Forms for a chance to win a “swag bag.”
“Meeting the Link Crew was my favorite part because they were very considerate and kind,” eighth grader Ari Trujillo said. “I learned that there are a lot of nice people here and classes here are interesting since there are so many to choose from.”
Many food trucks, such as Austyn’s Burgers and Paradise Cookies & Ice Cream, sold food and drinks in the new quad next to the 100 and 200 buildings.
