When you wish upon a star, be careful not to get distracted by the lights. This holiday season, the Lights Festival makes its return for the second time after its five year hiatus at the L.A. Zoo.
From Nov. 27 to Jan. 3, the holiday event transforms parts of the L.A. Zoo into a nighttime light show consisting of animal-themed light figures, holiday treats, light tunnels, water shows and sparkling displays. Taking place in the dark, the event fully immerses guests into the beautiful lights and holiday themed music.
I was in awe of the exhibits due to their breathtaking and spectacular nature. Although it was a nighttime event, I had no trouble navigating due to the light figures and the staff who were willing to give directions to any lost people. The light tunnels and water shows were definitely showstoppers and seemed to capture my attention and the attention of everyone around me. Since there is no timed entry, I took my time and fully enjoyed the exhibits. Although the zoo wasn’t too crowded, I strongly recommend being there early in order to avoid crowds of people. Overall, I thought the visit to the L.A. Zoo was definitely worth the entrance fee.
The self-guided tours through the illuminated zoo are also accompanied by special holiday events. From Nov. 27- Nov. 29 and Dec.4-Dec. 23, visitors have the chance to interact with real reindeer along with a visit with Santa. The zoo has also added new displays such as a glowing 130-foot snake and monkeys throughout that act as guides to visitors.
On Dec. 31, the zoo hosts a family friendly New Year’s Eve Party. From 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there will be a dinner buffet, carousel rides, crafts, a dance party and a live broadcast of the Times Square ball drop.
You can buy tickets online or at the gate. Admission to the light festival is $13 for adults (13+) and $11 for children (2-12) from Mondays through Thursdays, excluding Dec. 21, 22 and 23, and $16 for adults and $14 for children on Fridays through Sundays. During weekdays, there is a late night special where guests who arrive after 9 p.m. can get tickets for $9.
