Athletic Director Mr. Ralph Fick announced that the school has decided to part ways with Varsity Head Football Coach Rob Castaneda and his staff during a lunch time meeting with current and former players on April 27. Coach Castaneda led the Rams to a 3-7 record during his only season with the Rams, failing to qualify for the C.I.F. playoffs.
Fick told the players that administration will begin looking for a staff immediately and plan to name the head coach in the next six to eight weeks. The team will continue off-season workouts with Coach Cary Smith, who served as an assistant on the freshman staff this past season and is currently working as a guidance counselor at the school.
Many players, including some returning varsity starters, decided to leave the team during the off-season, citing Coach Castaneda and the staff as their primary reason for their departure. The school district received many complaints about the coaching staff after the season ended, prompting administration to decide that it was time to cut ties with Castaneda. Since Fick’s announcement, many of these athletes have rejoined the team and have high hopes for the upcoming season.
The Rams started off the 2014-2015 with a promising 2-2 start, but lost five out of their last six games, including an embarrassing 74-20 blow out loss to the rival San Marino Titans. Administration is now looking for a head coach that will turn the program around and shape the Rams into the dominant force it once was.
