Cookies and Cramming
Link Crew designed Cookies and Cramming primarily to help freshman study for finals, but all students were welcome. This year’s event was held on Thursday Jan. 15 in the Media Center from 3-5 pm. Teachers volunteered their hours to answer any questions that students had. Cookies were available for everyone to enjoy while they studied.
Computer Science Classes
In the near future, possibly by next year, students will have the option of taking Computer Science or AP Computer Science, thanks to Former La Rosa Elementary Principal Mr. Michael Lin.
These classes will teach students computer programming, building web applications and coding with Python. The next steps to bringing these classes to campus include hiring a teacher with the proper credentials, securing funds to pay for the teacher’s salary and creating the course scope and sequence to meet a-g requirements.
Small Business Management Cookie Cook-Off
The Small Business cookie contest is on Thursday, Jan. 29 during lunch. Students and teachers are invited to bake the cookies in Ms. Kim Allen’s classroom kitchen, using only the ingredients provided. The judges will also consist of staff and students, with a $3 entry fee for both chefs and tasters. Chefs are required to create 48 samples, and the grand prize is a $25 gift card.
TCSF Grants
At the Dec. 7 staff meeting, the Temple City Schools Foundation announced the grants awarded to several students and staff who applied. TCSF is a nonprofit organization that provides donations for educational purposes. TCSF gave an $800 grant to ASBL’s Renaissance Committee that would help support better student recognition methods and the Renaissance Assembly that takes place at the end of the year.
Among staff members, Math Teacher Mr. Gary Ledger received a $506.24 grant that funded a common core project that brought teams together to build a mouse-trap-powered car. In order to pay for a Vitamax smoothie machine, Health Teacher Mr. Lyle Takeshita received a $450 grant. Additional staff who received donations include Mr. Evan Dagger, History Teacher Ms. Sandee Kidd and Math Teacher Mr. Mark Howard.
