As the meet against South Pasadena comes to an end, the seniors on the swim team are suddenly faced with the realization that they will not be competing for the high school ever again.
This bittersweet moment is shared throughout the team as they have become closer this year with the help of Seniors Marshall Tang and Christina Guevarra.
“Christina and I are very close friends,” Tang said. “We wanted to extend our friendship to include the rest of the team.”
Tang also made considerations for the 100 yard Backstroke and the 100 yard Butterfly. He was also part of the 400 yard Freestyle relay that made the consideration cut.
Although the team is sad that the seniors will be leaving, they have many things to celebrate as well. As a result of their hard work and effort they put in this year, the team was able to record many impressive times. For example, JV swimmers Sophomore Christy Lam and Freshman Brian Chang broke records for the 100 yard Breaststroke at the Rio Hondo League Finals on May 9 with times of 1:17.76 and 1:06.09, respectively.
“Throughout the race, the thought of pushing myself to the limit ran through my mind,” Lam said. “The end result was astonishing even to me. Because of my hard work and my will to never give up, I was able to break my personal record not once, but twice.”
The swimmers were also qualified for C.I.F. considerations. Junior Susan Su’s time made the cut and she competed in the 100 yard Breaststroke at the C.I.F. meet on May 15. Su also made considerations for the 200 Individual Medley.
“I am proud of my swim,” Su said. “I came in second in the first heat. I feel great when I swim so I enjoy it very much.”
Su’s time dropped four seconds to 1:08.81 since the beginning of the season. Swimming at the C.I.F. Division I level has shown Su the competition and has inspired her to swim even faster to beat them.
“I think this was a good season for me,” Su said. “I worked harder this year and put more passion into my swim.”
