The Varsity Boys Volleyball team started Rio Hondo League with a record of two wins and one loss. The Rams are currently in second place and have high hopes of securing a C.I.F. spot this season after posting a disappointing 2-6 league record last year.
The boys came out pumped for their season opener on March 4 against Saint Francis, sweeping them 3-0. Then the boys began to struggle losing the next two games to La Salle and Crescenta Valley.
“We were still getting adapted to playing with some of the new Varsity members,” Senior Andrew Pau said. “We knew we had to gather ourselves and begin to communicate for us to be successful.”
The Rams picked up their game with wins against Flintridge Prep and Schurr High School. The boys gained much needed confidence heading into the San Gabriel Volleyball Tournament.
“It was great to see how we were beginning to get comfortable with each other and how things were beginning to flow,” Senior Kenneth Trang said. “We had a big tournament coming up that would challenge us and expose us to some good players, so we came together at the right time.”
The boys lost to Whittier Christian on March 14 in their first game of the San Gabriel Tournament. They managed to bounce back by beating Campbell Hall and Los Altos to bring their overall record for the tournament to 2-1. Then, the Rams lost to Calvary Chapel the next day but defeated North High School and Whittier Christian in their rematch.
“Overall we went 4-2 in the tournament, which is pretty good,” Senior Brian Tang said. “It was good experience and practice for league. We learned some of our weaknesses and what we needed to change.”
The Rams then held their league opener on March 24 against the South Pasadena Tigers. The boys struggled and were swept in three sets.
However, they started to turn their season around when they defeated the La Cañada Spartans and the San Marino Titans, moving them up to second place and in good position to qualify for C.I.F.
