The Varsity Girls Soccer team is on their way to qualifying for C.I.F. this year as they currently sit in third place with a league record of 3-5-1, and an overall record of 11-8-3.
The Lady Rams won their league game opener 5-0 against the Blair Vikings. Then, the girls tied with the South Pasadena Tigers 1-1.
“We wanted to make sure to get off to a good start this year. We worked all summer to get ready for league,” Senior Bri Guerrero said. “It was good to start the season with a win, but our tie with South Pasadena opened our eyes to some weaknesses we had to work on during practice.”
Midway through the season, the Lady Rams hit a rough patch, facing a 5-1 loss to the San Marino Titans. The struggles continued as the girls suffered one loss to the La Cañada Spartans and a tie versus the Monrovia Wildcats.
However, the girls bounced back, claiming a victory at home by a margin of three goals against Blair. The Lady Rams went on to extend their winning streak by defeating the Tigers last Wednesday 1-0, but lost their next two games to San Marino and La Cañada.
“We fixed some of the mistakes we made during the games we lost,” Senior Lexy Garcia said. “With the win against South Pasadena we were one step closer to clinching third place in our league.”
The main key to the Lady Rams’ sucess this season was the amount of time they have spent preparing and practicing. The team has been working vigorously on fundamental skills, such as dribbling in traffic and accuracy on their shots. The team has also been focusing on improving their conditioning so they can maintain a high level of intensity on the field.
The girls had a solid preseason with a record of 8-5-2 and participated in multiple tournaments like the Claremont Classic and Duarte Tournament.
The team played tough teams in preseason, which helped the returning seniors adapt to playing with the newcoming Varsity members increasing their team’s chemistry.
The Varsity Girls have already improved from their record last year in league, which put them just outside of qualifying for C.I.F. With a few games remaining in the season, if the Lady Rams continue to perform like they have this year, then they will have a good chance of finishing in third place.
