The melodious voices of Jordin Sparks and the late Whitney Houston blend together in the song “Hooked on Your Love” in a remake of the 1976 movie, “Sparkle.”
In the movie, Sparkle and her sisters struggle to chase after their dreams of performing together as they go against the values of their Christian mother. The oldest sister continues to stray away and eventually leaves the home to be with her fiancé. The family then struggles to reconcile their relationships with each other as they battle drug abuse, domestic violence, and broken dreams.
The movie fell below my expectations because the plot line was very confusing. Prior to watching the movie, I had expected the movie to be focused on Sparkle. Although the movie showed her timid nature well, I still felt misled. The whole time I was waiting and waiting for Sparkle to get her big moment, but every time I saw her, I felt that her oldest sister was more of a star than she was.
The movie’s touching scenes were what made it worth watching. The acting allows viewers to relate easily to characters and think of their own family while watching. Nearing the end, Sparkle and her sister rescue their oldest sister from her fiancé. It plays out into an emotional fight between the sisters and the fiancé that demonstrates the true meaning of family through love and protection.
In the end, Sparkle finally gets her big moment and performs her songs. She invites her mother to come watch her performance, who finally supports Sparkle’s passion and love for music. Not only does she attend the show, but she also brings Sparkle a dress, just in time for the show. Sparkle’s mother even reconciles with her oldest sister. “Sparkle” reminds viewers of unconditional love and forgiveness within families.
”Sparkle” reignites the holiday feelings of family love and is perfect to watch this holiday season.
