Convenient headwraps create casual couture

Regardless of the onslaught of fall fashion magazines or the surplus of sweaters and peacoats currently being displayed in clothing stores, the first few months of fall in Los Angeles know only one word: hot.

With all that perspiration, what better way to get the hair out of your face than with a simple, stylish do-it-yourself headwrap?

I like things that are quick, easy, cheap and require minimal effort on my part. For these three easy headwrap styles, you’ll only need an old top that you don’t mind cutting up. I’ll be using a plain tank top for these looks, but you can substitute it with any shirt as long as the material has a stretch to it.

The Prep

Lay the tank top on a smooth, flat surface. Use a ruler and from the bottom measure about 1/4 the length of the top. Mark it and with a pair of scissors, cut off the strip. Now with your circle of cloth, take one side seam and cut along it so that it becomes a long strip.

With the other 3/4 of the tank top, use the ruler to measure, mark and cut a line right underneath the neckline. Cut along a side seam again so that it opens. You should now have two strips of cloth for your headwraps.

The 50’s Knot

This 50’s bunny ear headwrap is perfect for an upcoming retro party that your friend is hosting, or if you’re looking to add some flair to your outfit by rocking this iconic look.

Take the thinner strip of cloth and fold it in half so that the two ends are next to each other. Grab the folded piece of cloth and wrap it around your head. Pull one of the strips through the loop. Take the two ends and tie a simple knot on the top of your head. Leave the ends alone and your throwback look is complete.

The Figure Eight

This is the easiest to do out of the three. Perfect for those days when you find yourself running late to school and have no time to tame that bed head. You can complete this look on your way to school, in the car or during class.
Take the thinner piece of cloth again and tie the ends so that it makes a circle. Twist the circle around twice so that it makes a figure eight and fold the two loops in half on top of each other so that it resembles a circle. Place the circle on your head and adjust; now you have an easy and stylish bad hair day fix within seconds.

The Turban

This is for those of you looking for something with a funky twist. Take the 3/4 material from the shirt and fold it diagonally so that it resembles a triangle. Place the triangle’s tip directly above your head and hold out the side flaps on either side of your head.

Carefully bring the base of the triangle around the nape of your neck so that it molds around your head, and tie the two flaps at the top. Tuck in the ends and you’re ready to head out the door.

Whether you’re having a bad hair day or just getting into the head-wrap trend, it only requires one item and a few adjustments. You don’t need to purchase anything and if you don’t have a shirt to spare, all of these styles can be substituted with any patterned scarf of your choice. Head-wraps are a great way to change up your outfit and bring a different element to your everyday wardrobe
