With AP tests coming up next week, many people are preparing their minds for these exams while neglecting another asset that is just as important: their bodies. Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast can give you increased concentration during class and tests.
Carbohydrates are the body’s main energy source and can keep you awake during exams. Cheerios are great at providing carbs and also contain just the right amount of sugar to give you a little boost during the day without overloading the calorie count. Other sources of carbohydrates are starchy foods, such as bread. For a sweet early morning treat that will still keep your eyes open during the day, you can also spread a little honey or peanut butter on whole wheat bread, which is higher in vitamins and proteins than regular white bread.
From head to toe, your entire body is made of proteins. Studies show that protein from breakfast foods can enhance memory and concentration—two important components of test-taking. One cup of yogurt or an egg each provide about five grams of protein, which is about how much one needs in the morning.
Contrary to popular belief, coffee and tea are not your allies on test days. Caffeine may give you a wake-up call in the first couple hours of the morning, but will not last until that test in fourth period. In fact, your brain might abandon you when you need it most.Eating a healthy breakfast is more beneficial than trying to run on caffeine. With that said, one cup probably won’t hurt and it may help kick-start your day, but in the end, a good breakfast will definitely carry you through a rough testing day better than any amount of caffeine.
So instead of trying to get a few extra minutes of shut-eye, get out of bed and invest in a good breakfast. Try yogurt sprinkled with fruits, nuts and cereal or scrambled eggs on toast for that quick morning meal that will surely help you stay bright-eyed and healthy.
