Orchestra Disney Trip

Advanced, Honors and Freshman Orchestra sight-read music under the direction of conductor Brad Gardner, who currently plays keyboard for the musical “Wicked” at the Pantages Theatre, at Disney’s Imagination Campus on Jan. 15.

Situated behind Disneyland California Adventure, Disney’s Imagination Campus provides performing arts workshops to Southern California high schools; the orchestras participated in their Instrumental Soundtrack Session. Throughout the session, the ensemble played in a professional studio where their performance was recorded and put onto a sound byte for future use on a Disney or Pixar movie.

As the workshop only lasted for 90 minutes, the musicians could enjoy the parks for the rest of the day.

“I like to make this opportunity open to them so they gain some insight into the music industry and what’s available to them,” Band and Orchestra Director Phil Bailey said. “I want them to know that there’s more to music than playing an instrument at school.”

Winter Rally

The gymnasium transformed into a winter wonderland on Jan. 17, celebrating the many performing arts groups active this season, notably Choreo, whose annual dance concert, titled Utopia, was later that day.

Along with various winter-themed activities, the rally also highlighted performances from K-Pop Dance Team, Choreo’s Fusion team and an appearance from the main cast of the upcoming musical “Anything Goes.”

The star prop was the T-shirt cannon and each time it came out, the crowd went wild, hoping they got the free merchandise.

Instead of its usual T-shirts, the cannon shot out fuzzy socks with redeemable 5-Star codes.

The raging wildfires and winds postponed the rally and Principal Elena Li delivered a closing moment of silence for victims of the devastation.

The ASB Assemblies Committee began preparing for the Winter Rally soon after the Homecoming Rally. They planned activities and   performances relating to the theme, “Winter Wonderland.” The committee then built props, outlined a script and conducted rehearsals.
