Administration is currently piloting a new system that requires students to use their 5-Star ID to scan in and out of class instead of taking a physical hall pass to the restroom.
If the change is implemented, students leaving class must scan a QR code in the classroom through the “Hall Passes” tab in the 5-Star app. From there, 5-Star issues a hall pass and students must scan again to close the pass when returning to class.
Every reason to leave class will have an individual QR code up in each classroom. Students must scan the QR code for their specific reason. Some examples include going to the restroom or nurse.
“We’re trying to provide more safety and security for students on campus,” Activities Director Mike Kidd said. “It’s important for parents to know that their students are safe. By having digital hall passes, it makes it so easy for campus supervisors to know who is out of class in case of emergencies and things like that.”
Campus supervisors will know when a hall pass is issued, who currently has one and what the hall pass was issued for.
The pilot started in April and if successful, digital hall passes will replace the current system next fall.
“Teachers’ hall passes get lost, they get stolen and they get delaminated,” Woodworking teacher Elias Bourjeili said. “I will never touch my hall pass. It’s gross, unsanitary and just not a good way of doing it.”
