Some Kind of Wonderful (PG-13)
This 1987 high school drama is often referred to as the polar opposite of filmmaker and screenwriter John Hughes’ other love triangle-centered romance, “Pretty in Pink,” both featuring unpopular main characters that enlist the help of their eccentric best friends to pursue an admired, popular love interest.
While “Some Kind of Wonderful” lacks the appearance of Molly Ringwald that many other John Hughes films are well-known for, director Howard Deutch incorporates the same high school tropes. The storyline pits the popular cliques against the outcasts, drawing the conclusion that individuality will ultimately win over the superficial. Overall, this intimate picture portrays the perfect high school love that leaves the audience thinking of their own teenage years.
Love and Basketball (R)
Capturing romance in sports along with relatable pressures from parents, “Love and Basketball” follows the lives of two competitive basketball players, Monica and Quincy, as they grow up together, experience different coming-of-age troubles and achieve their dreams on the court while sacrificing time and commitment to their relationship.
