Every outfit has a different thought behind it, filled with personality and individuality. To start off the new year, junior Nathaniel Leonard and sophomores Shirley Wu, Kaylee Yu flaunt their eye-catching styles every day.
Nathaniel Leonard
Leonard styles a white H&M shirt with a Brighter Side belt of the same shade around his waist, matching his white Vans. Tucked into his blue jeans, Leonard wears a green dress shirt with complementary silver necklaces and rings from Vitaly.
“The way I dress definitely affects how I confident I feel,” Leonard said. “Fashion makes me feel better, because I am wearing something that I feel comfortable in. It also helps me express my feelings through my clothes.”
Leonard’s inspirations come from Pinterest, with a focus on the Korean streetwear style and soft boy aesthetic. When he has an outfit idea in mind, he looks for clothes in his favorite stores such as Abercrombie, Pacsun and Cotton On.
Shirley Wu
Inspired by ‘80s Italian denim, Wu matches Hysteric Glamor jeans with a ‘90s blue vintage denim top, completing the look with a pair of white Converse shoes and silver necklaces for a cherry on top. Their interest in fashion started in elementary school, and since then Wu has continued to find new ways to express themself.
“I think that ‘being fashionable’, or ‘having good fashion taste’ just means that one is capable of identifying what types of clothing will have the desired psychological impact on others,” Wu said. “Fashion means that I feel represented in what I wear and that I have a personal connection to what’s on my body. I love how my clothes make me so conscious of what happens when we lose this connection to our possessions.”
Kaylee Yu
Sporting thrifted pieces, Yu pairs blue jeans and a white Uniqlo t-shirt, tied together with a black sweater around their waist. They add on a pair of white sunglasses from Amazon. To top it off, they wear a thrifted leather jacket with silver buttons.
“I wouldn’t like to limit my style to a specific genre, as the way I dress deviates from day to day,” Yu said. “To me, fashion is finding a different way to feel every day. My outfit is pretty representative of how I want to approach the day. One day I can look like a fishing grandpa, and the next, like a kindergarten boy.”
