The winners Seniors Calvin Chan, Kirby Jou, Jennifer Liu, and Dorene Zhou, Juniors Paulina Lin, Kathy Tu, and Kimberly Vong and Sophomore Benjamin Gray won a $100 cash prize.
The Cello Octet played in the dark with glow sticks attached to their instruments to add a unique flair to their performance. They thought of the act in the summer and rehearsed once a week throughout the following months.
“The original idea came from YouTube,” Lin said. “We just brainstormed and got creative with it.”
Runner-up Senior Limaris Mendoza sang “Hero” by Mariah Carey and Senior Lizette Arellano finished the talent show with her performance of “At Last” by Etta Jones, which placed her in third.
Other acts included a stomp choreography, a conduction and covers of songs such as “Someone Like You” by Adele, “Too Close” by Alex Clare and a cover of Michael Bublé’s song, “Quando, Quando, Quando.”
The talent show is Dragonflicks’ main fundraiser of the year. The money goes towards a new radio system and computers, since the current equipment is nearly outdated.
Dragonflicks members determined their job positions by signing up on a first-come, first-serve signup sheet.
“I’m stage manager, so all responsibilities fall on me,” Junior Melissa Cook said. “I make sure the decorations look good, that there’s food to sell, and that we sell enough tickets.”
Sophomore Karissa Chan and Senior Brandon Soohoo emceed the show. Chan asked Soohoo to co-emcee the show even though he isn’t in Dragonflicks.
“It was an interesting experience,” Soohoo said. “It was definitely worthwhile.”
