With COVID-19 pushing back premieres, many people only had access to films through their personal screens. Even though it was an unconventional year, there were no shortages of entertaining movies. Here is a recap of TCHS’s favorite movies of 2021.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”
An important film for Asian representation, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” introduces a new Avenger rooted in mystic mythology. Chinese dialogue and kung fu-inspired battle choreography make the movie enjoyable with its accurate allusions to Asian culture.
With complex characters, stunningly choreographed action sequences and a well-rounded storyline, “Shang-Chi and
the Legend of the Ten Rings” is a fulfilling action film that doesn’t neglect character relationships.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home”
Following the end of the second Spider-Man movie, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is a highly anticipated continuation of the aftermath of Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man being exposed. While Parker’s personal life is thrown in disarray and he is faced with the burden of making sacrifices, the plot is further complicated with the arrival of new villains.
The return of previous Spider-Man villains caters to three different age groups and evokes a sense of nostalgia from the audience while providing captivating action sequences with other special appearances. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is a superhero movie that encompasses what audiences enjoy: a compelling story and hero.
“Encanto”
“Encanto” is a feel-good movie that caters to everyone. With lessons on the stresses of familial obligations and the journey of self-acceptance, “Encanto” is a film that looks at the bonds of family and the identity of the individual person. Each character is charming in their own way, but their flaws humanize them which makes them more relatable to audiences. The beautifully-written songs are not only catchy but also help develop characters.
The stunning visuals and bright colors were also captivating aspects of the movie as they brought a vibrancy and upbeat tone to the scenes.
